Two dozen local cyclists persevered through wet and windy conditions Sunday morning to complete the Juneau Free wheelers' Auke Rec Long Course Road Race.
Chris Chiles edged John McConnochie by half-a-wheel to claim victory in the race with a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, 43 seconds.
The 35.8-mile course started and ended at the Auke Village Recreational Area, and most of the route stretched along Glacier Highway. The lead pack stayed together all the way out the road and much of the way back before Chiles and McConnochie broke away on the climb from Peterson Creek to the Shrine of St. Therese.
Other riders tried to catch up, but the lead duo pulled away for good on the last hill approaching Tee Harbor.
After Chiles and McConnochie finished, a large group crossed the finish line in a pack. Joe Sorenson edged Dave Bartlett by a wheel to claim third place. Careful examination of the finish-line video and interviews with the participants were needed to determine placing for the next eight racers.
