Community needs to keep trash in mind

Posted: Sunday, June 03, 2001

I truly do not understand people who thoughtlessly leave trash behind, deliberately litter the roadsides, or carelessly throw junk out the road. Out of sight, out of mind? My frustrations feel it is that they are without sight and out of their minds.

We live in a land of indescribable beauty. Stewardship of the environment seems to have been misplaced in these individuals with unnecessary acts of disrespectful filth and mischievous vandalism. I wonder what goes on in the consciousness of those involved in this inconsiderate behavior. It is incredibly sad when you look over the edge of a scenic viewpoint and see people's garbage and junk, and even more disheartening to clean it up only to find it trashed out again?

Why? So many angry thoughts and questions go through my mind as I battle with it. How do you affect a change of behavior and reach the hearts of those individuals who come out the road for recreation and leave behind their "wreckcreations?" I just don't know and that is why I am writing this.

Wouldn't it be nicer to have a community-wide celebration honoring the wonders of this land rather than a community-wide clean-up? And do these trashy individuals actually take this day and help clean up their thoughtless acts? I can only hope they might, however the biggest help would be to stop causing the problem.
