Because of the ineptitude of Sen. Cowdery, the citizens of Alaska are saddled with paying for a special session to decide on HB 260, relating to cruise ship pollution standards and oversight. I bristle at paying for this session, but pay for it we must.
The track record of the cruise ship industry is abysmal they will not "self-regulate." If we do not pass this bill, the cruise ships will go back to doing business as usual. This business involves dumping millions of gallons of their waste, such as human fecal material and coliform bacteria, into our waters. It means purposefully deceiving the public and the U.S. Coast Guard by covering up their illegal dumping and then lying about it, for which they have been fined millions of dollars. This sorry history is part of a very public record.
Alaska legislators, please do the right thing. Pass the cruise ship bill. It is long overdue.
