Yesterday's edition of the Juneau Empire marked the passing of Parade Magazine. Starting June 10, USA Weekend will replace Parade as the Empire's Sunday supplement. The reasons for the switch are somewhat complex, but for those who are interested we will explain.
The Parade folks would not agree to allow a couple of our sister papers to include USA Weekend magazine in their Saturday papers. Parade's resolve to maintain exclusivity forced our company to make a wholesale change that affects all Morris newspapers carrying Parade Magazine in their Sunday editions. Economics was not a factor in this decision. The two Sunday supplement suppliers are fierce competitors and we respect the stand that the Parade executives have taken.
We know many of you will miss Parade, but we think you will agree that USA Weekend is a stronger, more readable magazine. USA Weekend does an exceptional job of keeping up with the trends and lifestyle issues that mirror reader's varied interests.
USA Weekend has all the usual features you would expect such as cartoons, puzzles, and celebrity interviews. It also does an excellent job of building reader interaction and has founded a great community involvement program called "Make a Difference Day" which is in its ninth year. Nearly 2 million Americans volunteer their time doing good deeds on this special day.
USA Weekend appears in more newspapers than any other weekend magazine. Currently USA Weekend reaches more than 47 million readers each Sunday through 576 newspapers.
Here's a summary of some of the features offered in USA Weekend:
