JUNEAU - A bear harrassing campers at Brent's Beach Cabin on Kruzof Island was killed Thursday, Alaska State Troopers reported.
At about 10 a.m., troopers received a report of two campers from California inside the cabin being harrassed by the bear, which was outside and causing damage to the structure.
Two members of the Sitka Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to the area with rifles to assist the campers. The team arrived to find the bear still in the area and refusing to leave.
After conferring with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the State Troopers, the bear was killed. It was also learned from the U.S. Forest Service that the same bear had been a problem at the same cabin in May and the cabin had to be closed for repairs.
Fish and Game is working with the rescue team to salvage the meat and plans to offer it to the Sitka Raptor Center, which cares for injured birds.
