Title and firm: Kerry L. Kirkpatrick is the owner of Auke Bay Boat Rental, a new business headquartered at Auke Bay that offers skiffs, camping gear and fishing gear to the public interested in seeing Southeast Alaska from the water.
Services: "We rent out 16- and 18-foot skiffs (boats with outboard motors). We launch at Auke Bay and Douglas Harbor. We can also deliver to other places or people can trailer the boat to a spot like Echo Cove," Kirkpatrick said.
Most rentals are for the day, but arrangements can be made for much longer outings. "Somebody rented for Hobart Bay, which is almost all the way to Petersburg, for a week's trip. We have had them gone as long as three weeks to Tenakee for a vacation," she said.
The 18-footer with a partial canvas cover rents for $130 a day. Fishing gear is $15 a day. Camping gear rates "depend on what you are renting." There is a $200 damage deposit on a skiff, and a credit card is needed to make that deposit.
Auke Bay Boat Rental will also rent its skiffs to transport kayakers to Admiralty Island, where cabins can be reserved.
"In cooperation with Alaska Paddle Sports, we are going to be offering a guided evening kayak paddle once a week out of North Douglas. Paddling with someone with experience is a lot safer than paddling alone," Kirkpatrick said. The two- to three-hour outings will traverse around Outer Point or explore the Mendenhall Wetlands, depending on tides and weather.
Background: Kirkpatrick, 43, has lived in Juneau for seven years. "I moved here because I wanted to be in a bigger city after 18 years in Petersburg (population 3,350)." She has 20 years commercial fishing experience and holds a valid 100-ton captain's license. She has owned Juneau Outdoor Center, which rents 28 kayaks, for three years.
Quotable: "This service allows people to get out off the road system and get a feel of what Southeast is all about - to get into the wilderness. Most people don't have their own floatplane, so how else do you access it? Water is the highway here."
