Posted: Friday, June 05, 2009

JUNEAU - Trail Mix will hold its annual National Trails Day Family Outing on Saturday with a grand opening ceremony of the Gastineau Meadows Trail on Douglas Island.

The day's events start with volunteer work on the trail at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers will re-vegetate cleanup areas along the trail. No tools or experience is necessary.

At 10:30 a.m., Mayor Bruce Botelho, along with Parks and Recreation staff and Trail Mix volunteers, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

At 11 a.m., participants will have a choice of hiking opportunities: a historical hike, a cardio fast hike, a flora and fauna hike or a scavenger hunt hike for children.

In addition, Trail Mix hid three stuffed bears on May 30 on local trails: Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School through Switzer Creek, Treadwell Mine Loop Trail, Outer Point Trail, Brotherhood Bridge Trail or Spaulding Meadows Trail. Finders of the bears can attend Saturday's event for the possibility of winning a prize.
