Bike rodeo at Kmart scheduled Sunday
This year's annual Bicycle Rodeo is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kmart parking lot.
Children who have completed kindergarten up to age 14 are eligible to participate. Riders who wear helmets to the rodeo will win extra prizes. Parents are welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided.
In a new twist, youth 10 years or older who complete a skills test in the parking lot can accompany a police officer in a ``virtual reality run'' along a short section of the old Glacier Highway.
Track at Adair to be closed until August
The track and field area at Adair Kennedy Memorial Park will be closed from June 1 to Aug. 6 for the construction and installation of a new artificial field. The project comes from the 1998 voter-supported Proposition 3, which generated the funds necessary.
Tickets for Father's Day Cruise on sale
Tickets are now on sale at Carr's Quality Center and both Hearthside Books locations for the annual Father's Day Cruise on June 18. The cost is $30; proceeds from the three-hour wildlife watching trip will benefit the Southeast Alaska Food Bank.
Applications for community work grants available
Individuals and organizations that benefit and enhance the health, education and welfare of individuals in Southeast Alaska communities can seek funding support from the Wythe Dornan and Brian Douglas Memorial Fund.
Applications will be accepted until Aug. 9. They will be evaluated based on: quality of program to be supported or attended, reasonableness of proposed budget, background and experience of applicant, support from other sources and appropriateness to the objectives of the Fund. Annual trail awards given by Knowles
Gov. Tony Knowles kicked off National Trails Day in Alaska on Saturday by announcing the annual Governor's TRAAK (Trails and Recreational Access for Alaska) Awards for Excellence. The awards recognize the extraordinary commitment, leadership, and innovation of those working to improve Alaska's trails and access to many recreational opportunities.
Winners included Juneau's handicapped-accessible Kaxdigoowu Heen Dei (Clear Water Trail) along the Mendenhall River; Alaska State Park Ranger Darryl Hunt of Fairbanks for leadership in the Chena River State Recreation Area; the Bojer Wikan Fishermen's Memorial Park in Petersburg; Trail Mix of Juneau; The Yakutat Railroad Trail; the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust of Homer; the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage; the Mat-Su Trails Council; and Sitka Trail Works.
Parade deadline June 28
The deadline for entries to the 2000 Fourth of July Parade is June 28. This year's theme is ``Honor the past - Dream the future.''
Only original forms will be accepted; pick them up at Davis Log Cabin or the Mendenhall Library and return before the deadline date, along with a check payable to the Juneau Festival Association. Rates for the parade are: floats and decorated vehicles, $35; customized and classic vehicles, $10; marching units and animal units, $5; individual youth entries (infant to 16 years), free.
Historical grant applications sought
Applications for the Juneau History Grant are due by 4 p.m. June 16. The grant, which funds projects that document, preserve or improve access to the history of the Juneau-Douglas area, is available to students, individuals, organizations and teachers. Applications can be picked up from the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and local libraries; completed forms must be post-marked or hand-delivered to the City and Borough of Juneau Parks and Recreation Department. Meal benefits youth trip
A meal to benefit local youths at Northern Light United Church make a work trip to the Yakama Reservation in Washington is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. today at McPhetres Hall.
The dinner of ham, corn on the cob and fry bread meal is $5. A talk and slide show by Mike Turek, who lived and worked on the reservation, will follow the dinner.
