Sitka softball team goes 1-2 at state tournament

Wolves win opener, then suffer two close defeats

Posted: Monday, June 07, 2004

For the second straight year, the Sitka Wolves won their opening game at the state softball tournament then were eliminated by a pair of close losses.

The Wolves (15-9 overall) opened the tournament with a 5-1 victory over Colony on Friday morning at Hez Ray Softball Complex. But Sitka lost its next two games to 2003 champion and then-undefeated Chugiak and Dimond by identical 7-3 scores later on Friday and were eliminated from the double-elimination bracket.

"I thought we played really well, but we let the heat get to us," Sitka sophomore designated hitter Natalia Potrzuski said.

"We got down at the end, but I was excited. Lillian (Bullock of Dimond) came out and carried their whole team. But I thought we did really well. It was exciting just to be here."

In their opener, Sitka only had four hits but the Wolves were able to take advantage of three Colony errors and some walks for the win. Kelsey Hagan pitched a complete game for Sitka and allowed just five hits, while Colony's Haylee Fishback doubled for the game's only extra-base hit. Earlier in the season, Sitka beat Colony 4-3 to kick off a 4-0 road trip against the Mat-Su valley schools.

"It's a confidence boost for the rest of the tournament," Hagan said after the game. "We were aggressive on the bases and we were upbeat in the dugout. We're warmed up and ready to go."

In their second game, the Wolves fell behind early as Chugiak scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. But Sitka scratched out two runs in the third inning and added another run in the fourth. The Wolves had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, but Chugiak got out of the jam with a play at the plate.

The Mustangs, who lost 3-1 to Juneau in Saturday's championship game, then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the fifth to send Sitka to the losers' bracket. Potrzuski hit a two-run double in the third inning for Sitka, while Andrea Waters doubled and Courtney Waters tripled for Chugiak.

"I want that moment back, that was a good moment," Sitka coach Mike Hagan said about tying the game and having the bases loaded against Chugiak. "I wanted us to win one more game."

In their final game, Sitka took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Dimond before the Lynx scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Each team scored once in the third, then Dimond broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth when Bullock cleared the bases for three more runs.

While they didn't win the state championship, the Wolves did take home some hardware. Sitka won the team academic award with a 3.42 GPA.

"We're smart," several of the Wolves said as they went up to collect their trophy.
