Helm talks science, health and scripture
Sound off on the important issues at
Marie Helm, a practitioner of Christian Science healing, presents a free talk, "Overcoming the Culture of Fear," at 7 p.m., Thursday, in the Assembly Chambers.
Helm will discuss concepts found in the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She will share experiences of the healing of fear in diverse circumstances.
Marie Helm is a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship. She splits her time between Juneau and St. Petersburg, Russia. She serves as a volunteer chaplain at Bartlett Regional Hospital and has been an educator, youth group organizer and leader, legal secretary, and regional director for senior citizen volunteer programs.
Arbor Day features planting celebration
The Juneau Urban Forestry Partnership and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum are sponsoring an Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m., June 10 at the grave of Joe Juneau in Evergreen Cemetery. Everyone is welcome.
Volunteers will plant a tree next to the grave, replacing a tree that fell during the winter. A limited number of vine maples will be given away to good homes. Mayor Bruce Botelho will speak about Arbor Day and Juneau's designation as a Tree City USA.
The planting will be followed by a walk around the cemetery, noting some of the trees and graves of Alaskan pioneers. The walk will be led by volunteers from both JUFP and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Everyone is welcome. For details, call 364-2536.
Filipino Community celebrates 50 years
The Filipino Community Inc., will celebrate its 50th anniversary from 3 p.m. to midnight on June 12.
Manila Square, formerly known as Admiral Way, will be closed during this time, and use of loading zone and parking area will not be allowed.
