Body pulled from channel

Police say man likely drowned

Within view of docked cruise ships, Juneau police Wednesday pulled the body of a man out of Gastineau Channel.

Police said they identified the man, but declined to release his name pending notification of relatives. He was described as an Alaska Native in his 50s.

"We suspect he drowned," police Sgt. David Campbell said. "There were no other signs of trauma."

Police officers and Capital City Fire and Rescue workers recovered the body near the fuel docks on Jacobsen Drive, adjacent to Mount Roberts Road.

Shortly before 10 a.m., an employee of Taku Oil reported the body, Campbell said. It was found floating in a restricted area.

Police sent the body to Anchorage for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
