Dealership receives funds for expansion

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority Board of Directors recently approved $5.4 million, or 90 percent participation, in a business loan to Northstar Auto of Juneau, allowing it to purchase another dealership.

The purpose of the Northstar loan is for long-term refinancing of the existing Chrysler, Dodge and Subaru dealership and service center, combined with equity extraction, to purchase an adjacent dealership, which includes Honda, Toyota, GMC, Honda Power Equipment and National Car Rental franchises. About 23 new jobs will be created as a result.

The total $6 million loan was brought to the authority by First National Bank Alaska, which originated the loan and is participating with a $600,000 portion.

Approval by the authority's board is required for any loan participation that equals or exceeds $3 million.

Mining hall of fame Web site goes online

JUNEAU - The Alaska Mining Hall of Fame Foundation established a new Web site, The site features information about men and women who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, as well as information about the foundation.

Included as inductees are Frederick Bradley, who was the manager of the Treadwell and Alaska-Juneau mines; Richard Harris, an Irish immigrant and co-discoverer of gold in the Juneau district, and Livingston Wernecke, a geologist and engineer for the Bradley companies of Juneau.

The foundation was created as a nonprofit corporation in 1997.

New cyber cafe to open downtown

JUNEAU - A new cyber cafe, Universe Cyber Lounge, has opened in downtown Juneau at the former Elks Lodge. Husband and wife team Ana and Ruben Pereyra purchased the building in fall 2006 and recently opened the cyber cafe, which caters to cruise ship crew members.

Hot food and espresso drinks are served and Internet access is available during hours that ships are in port, or from roughly 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
