Alaska-based soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT RICHARDSON - A 20-year-old soldier assigned to Fort Richardson has died in a noncombat incident in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army officials say Spc. Jarrett P. Griemel of La Porte, Texas, died Wednesday evening at Forward Operating Base Gardez.

His death is under investigation.

Griemel was a petroleum supply specialist assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.

He joined the Army in June 2006 and arrived at Fort Richardson in March 2008.

Officials say Griemel's family has been notified of his death.
