ANCHORAGE - Walter L. Carpeneti has been elected as the new chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court.
He was elected in an unanimous vote of the justices on Thursday.
Carpeneti will replace Chief Justice Dana Fabe on July 1.
Fabe, the first woman to serve on the Alaska Supreme Court, was elected twice by her colleagues to serve two nonconsecutive terms as chief justice.
Carpeneti is a native of San Francisco, and earned his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1970.
In 1978, he became a public defender in Juneau before being named a superior court judge in 1981. In 1988, he was appointed to the five-member high court by former Gov. Tony Knowles.
