Juneau resident Peter M. Schneider died May 15, 2003, due to cancer.
He was a World War II veteran, serving as a crash-boat engineer in the Aleutian campaign until his release from duty in early 1946.
Returning to Juneau after the war, he worked as a trucker and heavy equipment operator, usually for the Hildre companies. He was a local post commander for the VFW and worked tirelessly as an advocate for veterans' rights and benefits.
Schneider spent the last 25 years of his life retired in Douglas, where he was active socially and politically to the point where his friends called him the unofficial "Mayor of Douglas."
He is survived by three nieces and a nephew.
