JUNEAU - Juneau-Douglas High School senior Eli Carlson has been awarded an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Carlson will travel to West Point, New York, for his induction ceremony on June 28.
Carlson received congressional nominations to the Academy from U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Don Young. Upon graduation from West Point, he is required to fulfill a five-year commitment to the military as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Carlson was awarded an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship to attend Oregon State University, as well as a University of Alaska scholarship.
Born in Petersburg, Carlson has attended schools in Alaska, Oregon and Maryland. He is vice-president of the JDHS National Honor Society, member of the JDHS orchestra and Juneau Junior Symphony playing viola, attended three summers with the Washington D.C. National Guard Leadership Development Program and has played soccer for 10 years.
Over the last year, Carlson worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He is the son of Sam and Cindy Carlson of Juneau.
