Babcock resigns top Republican job

Posted: Friday, June 09, 2000

JUNEAU -- Tuckerman Babcock has resigned as chairman of the Republican Party of Alaska, just three weeks after taking the position.

In an electronic mail message to former party chairman Thomas McKay, Babcock said he was resigning for ``private family reasons.'' ``I know this is an extreme step and I take it with reluctance for the obligations I will not be able to perform,'' he wrote in the e-mail.

Babcock confirmed in a telephone interview that he had written the e-mail, but provided no further information about why he was resigning, saying it was ``just purely a private matter.''

The current vice chairman, Randy Ruedrich of Anchorage, will take Babcock's place. ``We will proceed to conduct the affairs of the party in an orderly manner,'' he said.

Babcock, a veteran GOP activist in Alaska, headed up John Lindauer's 1998 Republican gubernatorial campaign, but left after Lindauer gave conflicting reports about his finances.
