KENAI - The city of Kenai may designate two of its subdivisions as problem bear areas.
The declaration would require residents to use bear-resistant garbage containers.
The declarations are allowed under a recently enacted public safety ordinance.
City Manager Rick Koch said he plans to personally inspect the neighborhoods to see whether residents are leaving bear attractants outside their homes.
Typical attractants are trash-can garbage, pet food on decks and porches, bird feeders and unsecured outside freezers.
Police last week fired rubber bullets to drive off a grizzly bear trying to push its way into a home in one subdivision.
