I'm prompted to write by Keith Hermann's letter to the editor in the Empire on June 5. I always thought that the "slower" in "Slower traffic keep right" meant those driving slower than the speed limit should keep right - that if you are driving the limit no one should be passing anyway. The borough says Mr. Hermann is right. Seems they both want to keep the left lane open for speeders. They are not alone. But the concept that implies tailgating is caused by anyone other than the tailgater is a bit of a stretch.
Next, I'll respond to an article written by Joanna Markell in the Empire on May 12. This was about speeding too, on Egan Drive in front of the Goldbelt Hotel. Because the majority of motorists speed in this area, more stop lights and fewer lanes will be imposed at a cost of $1.5 million. A good example of the majority (the speeders) imposing its will on everyone. I wonder if Juneau will need more therapists to help deal with the guilt that will be caused by this. Or, by then, will the speeders forget that they caused the congestion?
