Friends of the Flags

Eirik Kellogg and Jim Akins put up the Maine state flag last month on Egan Drive. Friends of the Flags, a local nonprofit group, raises and cares for the 50 state flags that fly between the Douglas Bridge and Marine Park each summer. Besides Kellogg and Aikins, this year's flag crew also included Gloria Johnson, Jim Carroll, Hal Cleek, Mark Fuette and Bob Van Slyke. Use of the lift truck was donated by Tyler Rentals.

Michael and Eden Orelove updated each two-letter designation on the flagpoles so people can tell which flag is from which state. "Look for the new Georgia state flag which was adopted Jan. 30, 2001," Michael Orelove said. "The Georgia flag is flying along Egan Drive near the True Value Hardware Store."

The flags have to be replaced each year, so donations are welcome. They should be sent to Friends of the Flags, Box 32201, Juneau, AK 99801.
