Sound off on the important issues at

JUNEAU - Joshua Lambert of Juneau recently completed a 78-day course in Baja California with the National Outdoor Leadership School.

From Sept. 27 to Dec. 13, Lambert's group of 14 students and four instructors explored the mountains, deserts and coastlines of the Mexican peninsula. The group spent the initial weeks traveling through the backcountry on foot, carrying all their provisions in backpacks.

During the hiking section, instruction focused on the finer points of risk management and hazard evaluation, leave-no-trace camping, route selection and map reading.

Classes included discussions on group dynamics, leadership techniques, geology, wildlife identification and informal Spanish instruction.
