JUNEAU - The state ferry Chenega was involved in the rescue of three people over the weekend, officials with the state ferry system said.
Department of Transportation spokesman Roger Wetherell said six minutes after the Chenega left Whittier Sunday afternoon, three people were seen amid debris in the waters of Passage Canal.
He said their 22-foot boat apparently took waves over the bow and quickly sank.
The fast ferry's captain ordered the immediate launching of their rescue boat and pulled two men and a boy out of the water.
They were placed in survival suits and wrapped in blankets and taken back to Whittier. Wetherell said they were then taken to an Anchorage hospital, where they were treated and released.
They were identified as 31-year-old Andy Renner, and his 8-year-old son, Owen, of Palmer, and Renner's brother, 28-year-old Luke Renner of Homer.
