Posted: Wednesday, June 10, 2009

The cutter-rigged sailboat Ocean Watch arrived Tuesday on the first leg of its 13-month, 24,000 nautical mile voyage, called Around the Americas. The ship's goal is to increase ocean awareness while circumnavigating North and South Americas. The ship also will visit Dutch Harbor, Nome and Barrow.

In Juneau, crewmen will give public tours of the Ocean Watch from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. They also will show "A Sea Change," a documentary about ocean acidification, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Alaska Southeast Egan Lecture Hall.

Captain and project director Mark Schrader, center, a marine conservationist and wildlife advocate, is welcomed to Juneau at the downtown NOAA dock Tuesday after arriving from Seattle. Watch captain Herb McCormick, left, and first mate Dave Logan are part of an eight-person crew.

The 64-foot steel cutter-rigged sailboat Ocean Watch, designed by Bruce Roberts, motors into Juneau on Tuesday.
