JUNEAU - For this year's National Cancer Survivor's Day, Cancer Connection hosted their annual Celebration of Life walk, followed by a luncheon at the Baranof Hotel to honor local individuals and businesses.
Barbara Greening was named Survivor of the Year; Sabrina Bullard, of Bartlett Regional Hospital's Diagnostic Imaging Department, was named Medical Professional of the Year; the membership of PEO Chapter D are the Volunteers of the Year and the Juneau Empire was named the Corporate Partner of the Year. The luncheon was sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank.
This year's event was the 23rd occurrence of NCSD, which is the world's largest cancer survivor event. The idea for it originated in Kansas City, Kan., when cancer survivor Richard Bluch, co-founder of H&R Block, and his wife, Annette, held their first Cancer Survivor Rally to demonstrate that a cancer diagnosis is not an automatic death sentence.
Juneau's Cancer Connection is a grass-roots, nonprofit organization designed to assist people living with cancer, their families and support systems. Cancer Connection sponsors education programs and awareness events with the intent of prevention and early detection of cancer.
