Juneau Tennis Association - Second Annual Outdoor Tennis Tournament registration: Dates for this tournament were changed from May 30-June 1. Entry forms now are due by Wednesday, June 11, at the Mendenhall Valley location of JRC-The Alaska Club. The tournament draw takes place on Thursday, June 12. This tournament will take place at Cope Park on Friday, June 13, through Sunday, June 15 (if it rains, matches will move to JRC-The Alaska Club). Southeast Road Runners - Windfall Lake Trail Challenge Run: This challenging run of about 14 miles begins at 9 a.m., and covers rugged trail and dirt road, with some paved road at the end. This year's event will start at the Windfall Lake trailhead, off Glacier Highway near Herbert River. The course follows the Windfall Lake Trail, ascends to the head of Montana Creek, descends the Montana Creek Trail, and follows the Montana Creek and Skaters Cabin Spur roads to the West Glacier Trail parking lot past Skaters Cabin. Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club - North Douglas Team Time Trial: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the North Douglas side of the Douglas Bridge for a 25-mile team time trial to False Outer Point and back (riders will race in groups). Info: Chris Chiles, 780-5138.

Juneau Yacht Club-Sailing Squadron - Around Admiralty "Spirit of Adventure" Race: This 200-mile sailboat race around Admiralty Island is considered the longest inland water race on the west coast of North America. A mandatory skippers' meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the Juneau Yacht Club's Graham Room. The race starts at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 15, near Shelter Island near Auke Bay. Racers have a mandatory layover at Baranof Warm Springs and the race will finish sometime between June 20-23 at Mayflower Island near Douglas Harbor. For those not prepared to raise straight through, a special day-run only cruiser division will be available if more than three boats register for the class. This race is limited to single-hulled sailboats at least 20 feet in length. A handicapping system is used to equalize the field. Juneau Junior Golf Club - One-Club Championship Golf Tournament: This fund-raiser for the Juneau Junior Golf Club takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mendenhall Golf Course. There will be men's and women's divisions, prizes for first place through third in each division and other contests, such as closest to the pin and a random drawing for two roundtrip tickets to Gustavus. Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club bike handling clinics - Clinics will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 18, at 9171 Parkwood Drive (third turn after the Valley location of JRC-The Alaska Club, fourth house on the left). The clinics will be led by Joe Sorenson and will be limited to eight people per class. Cost is $10. Bring your mountain bike, water and snacks. Learn how to manage your bike on trails and roads, will focus on maneuvering around obstacles, riding in a pace line, jumps, hills, etc. Questions about the classes should be directed to Sorenson (321-8913). Pipeline skateboard and in-line skate clinic - Meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday-Wednesday, June 10-11, at Pipeline Skate Park, 2400 Mendenhall Loop Road. This clinic, which is sponsored by Zach Gordon Youth Center, is for young people ages 6-15. The cost is $15. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth soccer league coaches needed - Volunteer coaches are needed for the 2003 youth soccer seasons sponsored by Parks and Rec. People who are knowledgeable about the game of soccer and enjoy working with young people are encouraged to apply. The time commitment is about four hours a week. Houston's Hoop Camp 2003 registration - The 29th annual version of this event will feature three separate camps during June. Camp One is for students entering grades 2-6 and takes place June 9-13. Camp Two is for those entering grades 6-9 and is June 15-21. Camp Three is for those entering grades 9-12 and takes place June 22-28. The fee is $85 per player for Camp One and $175 for Camps Two and Three. Each camp is limited to 125 athletes on a first-come, first-seved basis. Families with more than one child will receive a one-time discount of $25. Sixth-graders wanting to participate in both Camps One and Two will pay $225, while ninth-graders wanting to do both Camps Two and Three will pay $300. There is a special price of $150 per player for teams of seven or more players. All instruction will take place at gyms at the Marie Drake Annex, Harborview Elementary School, Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School or the Juneau-Douglas High School gym. Instructors will be college and high school coaches and players from Alaska, Washington and Oregon, and there may be a special appearance by JDHS grad Carlos Boozer, who plays for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. Doyle Baseball School - The Gastineau Channel Little League hosts this event on June 9-13, with Ron Wolfe serving as coordinator. There are half-day and full-day rates and the school is open to the following age groups - age 6-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-older. Water Safety Instructor aide course - This WSI certificate course runs from 8-11:30 a.m. on June 16-20 at the Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool. This course is designed for individuals age 10-older who exhibit a strong sense of maturity and responsibility. Water Safety Instructor aide candidates must be able to demonstrate all the skills listed for Level IV of the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Program. Capital City Soccer League - Women's Classic Soccer League registration: The CCSL women's classic soccer league begins play on June 30. There are open scrimmages from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays (June 11, 18 and 25) at Adair-Kennedy. There will be open scrimmages for women (age 18-older) from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays (June 15). 4-H cross-country running program - This year's program will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursdays through the summer at various locations around Juneau. The upcoming schedule has the June 12 meeting at the Mendenhall River Trail parking lot at the end of River Road, the June 19 meeting at Sandy Beach, the June 26 meeting at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park track and the July 3 meeting at the outdoor covered play area at Riverbend School. There will be two running clubs this year - one for elementary school students led by Jamie and John Bursell, and one for middle school students led by Craig Farrington. The two age groups will have different workouts, but will meet near the same place to make car-pooling easy for parents. The season will culminate with the Douglas Two-Miler run on July 4. Treadwell Arena summer programs - During June, the arena is available for drop-in basketball from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays and from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays; drop-in in-line skating from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-7 p.m. on Mondays, and from 3-5 p.m. on Fridays; drop-in tennis from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays; and drop-in in-line hockey from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rental times also are available from 7:30-10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In-line skating and basketball fees are $4 for adults, $2 for youth, $1.90 for seniors. Hockey and tennis passes are $5 for adults, $4 for youth and $3 for seniors. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
