A 23-year-old Juneau man was arrested Thursday morning for severely beating a two-year-old girl.
Nicholas W. Kokotovich is charged with first degree assault and is being held in Lemon Creek Correctional Center on $100,000 bail.
The young girl, identified by family as Reina Stone, was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on May 14 with life-threatening injuries. She is now being treated at Seattle Children's Hospital.
Family members set up a website, http://myangelreina.webs.com, to raise funds and inform the community of her condition. She suffered brain damage on the right side and could be permanently blind, according to the website. "She will more then likely have to spend months in rehab to regain motor control and brain function," it says.
"This was a case that touched us all," Juneau Police Department spokeswoman Cindee Brown-Mills said. "It was a horrible crime and we are relieved that there is some closure for the family."
Officers located Kokotovich at the Mendenhall Apartments Thursday and he was arraigned the same day. A preliminary hearing was set for June 21 at 10:30 a.m.
On May 13, a staff member at Bartlett Regional Hospital contacted police after the Stone was brought in with severe injuries. The child was later medivaced to Seattle for evaluation and treatment.
The child had been brought to Bartlett by her mother and the mother's boyfriend. She had severe injuries to the face, head and neck areas, along with less serious injuries to other parts of her body.
The mother declined to comment when contacted Thursday.
Police ordered a search warrant for the girl's home during a child abuse investigation to look for evidence. Details of the search are unknown.
