JUNEAU - This year's Family Fishing Day at the Lake will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Twin Lakes. The annual event will include fun, food, games, gear and fast facts about fishing and all things fishy.
The annual event aims to give local youth an opportunity to get hands-on instruction on how to fish from experts in the field. Kids will learn proper fishing techniques from experts at the state Department of Fish and Game, and gear will be provided so kids can practice what they've learned in the stocked lakes.
The Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club will offer affordable lunch items starting at 11:30 a.m. including hot dogs, soda and chips. Proceeds will benefit the many projects that the club sponsors within the community and throughout the Rotary world. Rotaract, the local young adult's Rotary group, will facilitate free games for children beginning at 11 a.m.
The U.S. Forest Service will provide rowboats in which they can row young fishing enthusiasts out into the open waters of the lakes. They also promise the return of previous years' popular fish prints.
Other sponsors include Bullwinkle's Pizza, the City and Borough of Juneau, Behrends Mechanical, Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Northern Sales, Odom Company, Super Bear, Territorial Sportsmen and Western Auto-Marine.
Participants are advised to dress for the weather. For further information, contact Daniel Teske (ADF&G) at 465-8152, John Wynn (Rotary) at 465-6264, or Carol Mahara or Thor Eide (U.S. Forest Service) at 586-8800.
