Group suspending ballot initiative campaign

Posted: Friday, June 11, 2010

JUNEAU - The group behind an initiative to ban public funds for certain campaign and lobbying efforts is suspending its campaign, in protest.

Clean Team Alaska claims Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell and Attorney General Dan Sullivan improperly changed the language that will appear on the August primary ballot.

The department of law, in a memo last month, deemed the new language a more accurate description of the initiative's intent. But Heidi Verougstraete, with Clean Team Alaska, says it instead skews it.

She says the group doesn't intend to sue and wants the initiative on the ballot. But she says any title challenges should have been made long ago.

A judge previously ordered Campbell to rewrite language for a proposed abortion initiative. The original language was challenged as misleading.
