Fire at plant will impact electric bills

Posted: Friday, June 12, 2009

FAIRBANKS - A Golden Valley Electric Association spokeswoman says electric bills will rise this fall because of the fire last week at the power plant in downtown Fairbanks.

But the utility is uncertain just how much bills will increase.

Golden Valley is Aurora Energy's only electricity customer.

GVEA spokeswoman Corinne Bradish says with Aurora Energy's plant temporarily off-line, the cooperative is burning diesel at a plant in North Pole to make up for the electricity shortfall.

Burning diesel is more costly than buying power from the downtown plant.
