Landscape architects host design workshop

JUNEAU - The Alaska Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects will host a three-session garden design workshop at the Bill Ray Center. Workshop times are 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday; 6:30-8:30 p.m. on June 21; and 10 a.m.-noon, 1-3 p.m. or 3-5 p.m. on June 23.
The workshop will provide two evenings of classroom time dedicated toward developing a residential design for your property including the principles of design, site analysis, plant material, site design, elements in the landscape and construction techniques.

Sound Ocean Adventure Race in Sitka Saturday
SITKA - Racers in kayaks, canoes, rowing shells, paddle boats, Tlingit warrior canoes and other human-powered watercraft will compete in the inaugural Sitka Sound Ocean Adventure Race on Saturday, June 16, starting and finishing at the Mount Edgecumbe High School boat ramp on Sitka's Japonski Island.
A benefit for the Sitka Maritime Heritage Society, the race will feature two courses -a long course of 23 miles, starting at 8:30 a.m., and a short course of 13.3 miles, at 9:30 a.m.
The two courses will head north on Sitka Sound and follow a counter-clockwise circle around various islands in the area (a map is posted online). A community potluck picnic will take place after the race at 3 p.m.
All racers must attend a pre-race safety meeting at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15, at the Rasmussen Center at Sheldon Jackson College. The entry fee is $40 for the first person and $25 for each additional person competing in the same boat.

Turf field now available for community use
JUNEAU - The Juneau-Douglas High School turf practice field downtown is available for community use.
The hourly charge for reserving the field is $5 for nonprofit youth groups, $10 for nonprofit adult groups and $15 for other groups.
Groups and individuals are asked to keep food, drink, gum and animals off of the field. To reserve the area please contact Community Schools at 523-1773. Those reserving the field do have priority use over those without reservations.
Nancy Watters concert tonight at Perseverance
JUNEAU - Nancy Watters and local guest artists will present a concert, "Breath of the Beloved," a musical experience honoring many faiths and cultures at 7 p.m. tonight at Perseverence Theatre.
This mystical concert includes cosmic chants performed in a number of different languages ranging from ancient Tibetan influences to middle eastern chanting. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information contact Janice Taylor at 789-7483.
Watters will also conduct at experiential workshop, "Sacred Healing Song - The Magic of Chant," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the University of Alaska Southeast Lake Room. Participants will learn a cross-cultural repertoire of chants drawn from many spiritual traditions as well as sonic massage, vocal prayer and meditation, mysticism of sound, physics of sound, yoga laughter and self discovery. Cost is $75 which includes tuition, lunch and snacks.
