Juneau's American Legion Post 25 Midnight Suns baseball team defeated the senior Legion team from Puyallup, Wash., 5-4 in seven innings Thursday in Puyallup to improve its record to 4-2.
Bud Baun got the win for the Midnight Suns, pitching just over two innings of middle relief. Kalen Meeks started the game and gave up two runs in the first inning, before being relieved by Baun.
Lapaka Pavitt closed the game, giving up two unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work and picking up the save.
"The team looked good," coach Jim Ayers said. "What I'm really happy about is Pavitt being our closer. Meek was doing fine when I took him out, but we agreed before the game that everyone will pitch two innings."
Puyallup took the early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Juneau tied the game in the second and took the lead in the third inning on a sacrifice by Nick Wolf that scored Bryson Buck from third base.
The Midnight Suns added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead on a single by Joe Ayers that scored Buck and Zach Kohan.
Payallup scored two in the seventh, but the rally fell short and the Midnight Suns claimed their fourth straight victory.
Buck had two doubles to lead the Midnight Suns' offense, while Garrett Schoenberger and Kohan each contributed a double.
"We're playing great and having fun," Ayers said. "We wouldn't be able to do it without all the support from the businesses and people from Juneau."
Juneau originally was scheduled for an off day, however, the Northwest Hurricanes Baseball Club canceled and Payullup agreed to play Thursday instead. Post 25 will take today off before playing Centralia Baseball Club on Saturday in Centralia, Wash.
