Man sought for rape at JDHS

Suspect in alleged attack left town 2 days before charges were filed

An 18-year-old suspect being sought for an alleged rape at Juneau-Douglas High School is believed to have left town.

David A. Northcut faces two counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and one count of third-degree sexual abuse of a minor. The felony charges stem from an alleged attack on a 14-year-old girl on May 28 in the Marie Drake annex, court records show.

Juneau police determined that Northcut, whom they questioned, was aware of the investigation into the girl's allegations and left for Seattle on Wednesday with money he had received for his recent high school graduation, according to an affidavit from Assistant Juneau District Attorney Doug Gardner.

Juneau District Judge Peter B. Froehlich signed an arrest warrant for Northcut on Friday.

The girl reportedly was in the ninth grade. She told police she and Northcut knew each other, according to the affidavit.

The assault allegedly took place before 8 a.m. on the last Friday of the school year in a restroom.

Police reported that the girl's father reported the incident on May 29. Juneau School Superintendent Peggy Cowan told the Empire last week that school officials learned about the allegations from police after the Memorial Day weekend.

Police investigators could not be reached for comment on the investigation Monday.

The court affidavit states that the girl told friends about the incident, and one friend encouraged her to report it. The girl did not, and the friend called her parents, who took her to the hospital and called police.

According to court records, the girl said Northcut asked her to go into the restroom with him. She said she did not want to but did not call for help from the few people walking in the hallway for fear of being embarrassed.

She said that after he pushed open the restroom door and pushed open a stall door, she cried and told the suspect to stop as he pulled off her clothes. During the assault, she told him it hurt and tried to push him away with her fists.

The charges allege that Northcut forced intercourse against her will.
