Alaska delegation announces community grants

JUNEAU - The Alaska Congressional delegation announced Monday several grants awarded to Alaska communities.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted $2.7 million to Kodiak to construct a sand and chemical storage building at the Kodiak Airport; $2 million to Anchorage for land acquisition adjacent to the seaplane base at the Lake Hood Airport; $1,149,364 to Sitka for the acquisition of snow removal equipment at the Rocky Gutierrez Airport; $500,000 to Anchorage for safety improvements at the Lake Hood Airport; and $184,500 to Sitka to conduct a planning study for the Sitka Seaplane Base.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services granted $185,427 to the Alaska Department of Education to support professional continuing education, organize a staff summit and develop a strategic plan and website. Funding is provided through the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.

The U.S. Department of Energy granted $1.5 million to Tanana to implement local energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. Funding is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development granted $200,000 to Anchorage for infrastructure improvements to the Abused Women's Aid in Crisis center to serve victims of domestic violence.

The U.S. Department of Transportation granted $6,408,000 to Metlakatla to start construction of the Annette Bay Ferry Terminal; $3,243,400 to the University of Alaska for the Alaska University Transportation Center; and $2 million to Anchorage for acquisition of snow removal equipment at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

The U.S. Department of the Army granted $45,780,000 to GM GDLS Defense Group LLC in Sterling Heights, Mich., to provide support for Stryker vehicles in various locations. Five percent of the contract work will be performed at Fort Wainwright.

The United States Transportation Command granted $14,490,000 to Evergreen Helicopters of Anchorage to perform passenger and cargo air transportation services in Afghanistan.
