Anchorage trail eroding into Ship Creek

Posted: Tuesday, June 15, 2010

ANCHORAGE - Concrete barriers, orange cones and blue plastic fencing block bike riders and walkers from a quarter-mile section of the Ship Creek Trail in Anchorage.

Groundwater and the creek are undercutting the trail and eroding the bank to within a foot of the asphalt. There's a 15-foot drop to the creek.

A transportation coordinator for the city, Lori Schanche, told The Anchorage Daily News officials are working on a temporary trail and later it will be permanently rerouted.

The Alaska Railroad, which owns adjacent property, and state and federal agencies also are involved.
