Disabled cargo ship adrift near Sitka

Posted: Monday, June 17, 2002

JUNEAU - A 670-foot container ship that has been adrift since losing power Sunday evening was expected to be under way by this afternoon, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The CSX Expedition was traveling from Tacoma to Anchorage with refrigerated cargo when an electrical fire broke out Sunday evening, causing the ship to lose power, Coast Guard officials said. The vessel was about 180 miles southwest of Sitka and the crew was working to repair the ship.

None of the 27 crew members aboard suffered any injuries, Coast Guard officials said.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Russ Tippets said a commercial tug from Sitka was on its way to meet the vessel in case the crew cannot complete repairs, but it was not expected to be needed.
