ANCHORAGE - A spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Social Services says former chief medical examiner Franc Fallico has died of cancer.
The 66-year-old Fallico died Saturday.
He had been on extended medical leave since October and he retired in April.
He had held the job since 2001.
Fallico was well-known in Alaska courtrooms.
He performed 1,577 autopsies, including some from Alaska's most gruesome crimes.
In 2005, he appeared in the Werner Herzog documentary "Grizzly Man" about the bear mauling of Timothy Treadwell.
A New York Times reviewer said Fallico was a "character around whom an entire reality show could be built."
