SEARHC hosting injury prevention conference in Sitka

Posted: Thursday, June 17, 2010

SITKA - The SEARHC Injury Prevention Team is hosting a conference called Preventing Injuries in Your Community: A Planned Approach, on July 19-20 in Sitka.

This regional conference will feature a mix of theory and hands-on work designed to assist participants in reducing the rate and severity of injuries in Southeast Alaska communities. Topics include injuries as a public health problem, program planning and measuring success.

This conference is open to any community member in Southeast Alaska and will provide and excellent opportunity to learn from and network with other people who are working on these important yet often overlooked issues.

Injuries can come in the form of falls, motor vehicle crashes, drowning, dog bites, bike wrecks, domestic violence, suicide and more. Injuries are often called "accidents" but in reality they are predictable and preventable. Whatever the particular injury concerns are in your community, the team of instructors will provide some proven tools to deal with them.

The conference will be at the SEARHC At Kaník Hít Community Health Services building in Sitka. This special event kicks off with a networking lunch at noon on Monday, July 19,where participants will get a chance to meet SEARHC staff from a wide variety of programs.

The first day goes from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, and then continues 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20. The fee for the conference is $50, which includes meals and snacks. Travel and registration fee scholarships are available.
