`Killing' and `taking' are two different things

Posted: Sunday, June 18, 2000

This letter is in response to your article on June 13, which stated a federal jury found Mr. Ralph Boyington guilty of killing a sea lion. As a member of the jury on that case, I can assure you that we did not find Mr. Boyington guilty of killing a sea lion. We did find him guilty of ``taking'' a sea lion. Taking is defined as harassing, hunting, capturing, killing, or the attempt to harass, hunt, capture, or kill a marine mammal. Although it may seem like a subtle difference, it is an important distinction to be made in fairness to Mr. Boyington. It is also important information for those who may have occasion to interact with marine mammals while on the water.
