Juneau's American Legion Post 25 Midnight Suns lost 9-8 to the host legion squad from Centralia, Wash., Sunday night in a scheduled nine-inning game.
The Midnight Suns pounded out 14 hits, including a two-run homer by Bud Baun and a triple by David Coogan. Centralia had 10 hits and three of them were back-breakers for Juneau.
Centralia's Sid Sandstrom knocked in two runs with a double in the first inning, Anthony Smith cleared the bases on a triple in the fifth and Kyle Henderson got the game-winner with a single that scored two runners in the seventh.
Will Nicholas started the game for Juneau and pitched into the fifth inning before being relieved by Baun who took the loss. Lapaka Pavitt closed the game for the Midnight Suns.
"It was a good ball game," coach Bruce Scandling said. "They were an older, more experienced team but we battled with them. Its a good confidence builder for us. They beat the MVP team that swept us on our first weekend. I think we earned a lot of respect."
Juneau's record fell to 4-3 with the loss. The Midnight Suns continue their three-week road trip today against the Midtown Crushers at St. Martin's in the first game of the St. Martin's Tournament. Evan Scandling is the scheduled starter for Juneau.
The six-team tournament features the some of the best club-level teams from around Washington. Juneau begins with three games in consecutive days, before taking a day off for double-elimination, round robin play that starts on Friday and continues through Sunday.
