Vessel takes on water near Hoonah

Good Samaritan vessels provided pumps to assist a 24-foot pleasure boat that took on water after possibly striking a whale near Hoonah, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The Get Real alerted the agency just after 11:30 a.m. Monday that the boat may have struck a whale and was taking on water.

The boat had been traveling at 30 knots. There were no injuries reported to the three people on board, who were all from the Yukon.

Nearby vessels responded with pumps and a Coast Guard helicopter on its way to Angoon also responded.

Coast Guard spokesman Scott Giard said the agency did not find an injured whale and the boat owner's report could not be confirmed.
