FAIRBANKS - A man facing federal child pornography charges filed in California may have ties to youth organizations in Alaska.
Authorities said the charges against 23-year-old Joseph Scott Szymanski were filed in Riverside, Calif., late last month after a couple stationed at Fort Irwin found a digital memory card featuring their son in various stages of undress.
Court documents said the photos were apparently taken in 2008 when the boy was 11 and Szymanski was his baby sitter. Pictures of a second unclothed boy were also found.
An FBI spokesman told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that Szymanski was separated from the military at the time of his arrest on Monday.
The FBI described his local affiliations as "scouting, a local youth home and possibly religious organizations."
