Industrial tourism is only part of the problem

Posted: Monday, June 19, 2000

I am concerned over the growth of ``industrial government.'' Please don't misunderstand me, I'm in support of the folks who deliver the mail, guard our shores, plow snow and pilot the ferry, but this unchecked onslaught of ``industrial government'' must be regulated.

Juneau is stressed by this menace, please consider the following:

Development: Telephone Hill was cleared and then strip-mined and the monstrous State Office Building was erected, followed by Fort Ray and the Plywood Palace.

Traffic: Observe Egan Drive between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Also big yellow trucks belching diesel smoke, packed with children plague the roads. Thousands of trucks and cars with various department logos impede my passage.

Public safety: Every January the Legislature convenes and no one is safe.

My quality of life has been adversely impacted by ``industrial government.'' Can we have one ``industrial government'' free day a week? Should we consider moving this scourge to Anchorage? Can the Peace and Quiet Coalition help?
