The Juneau American Legion Post 25 Midnight Suns began the St. Martin's Tournament with a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Midtown Crushers on Monday.
Juneau starting pitcher Evan Scandling gave up just four hits and two runs over 5 1/3 innings of work, but his effort wasn't enough to top the performance of the Crushers' Tom Brazier, who struck out 13 Juneau batters while giving up just two hits.
It was a bit of wildness by Scandling that made the difference in the game and contributed to both of the Crushers' runs.
In the second inning, the Crushers scored their first run when Steve McKee singled and scored on three consecutive walks by Scandling. In the fourth, Scandling walked Bill Lawrence, who eventually came around to score the game's winning run.
Joe Ayers led the game off for the Midnight Suns with a single, but Juneau would not get another hit until the seventh inning when Garrett Schoenberger singled with one out. Schoenberger scored the Midnight Suns lone run from third base on a groundout by Zach Kohan.
The Midnight Suns put the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the seventh when Will Nicholas got hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball, but he was unable to score.
Kalen Meek came in for relief of Scandling in the sixth inning with a runner aboard and pitched well, shutting down the Crushers and keeping Juneau in the game.
The Crushers are one of the many club teams in the tournament that draws players from around the Puget Sound area.
"It was another one we thought we could have won," coach Bruce Scandling said. "We were right with them. We certainly weren't hanging our heads about anything. This was one of the hot teams in the tournament."
The Midnight Suns play their second game of the tournament today against the MVP's from Lacy, Wash., who defeated Juneau in the first two games of their road trip on June 9. Juneau plays Puyallup on Wednesday before taking a day off until the tournament resumes Friday through Sunday with double-elimination games.
