• U.S.-Great Britain Friendship Handicap Golf Tournament - This annual fund-raiser for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mendenhall Golf Course. There are men's, women's and junior divisions, with trophies for first and second place in each division. There are closest to the pin contests, and a random drawing for a day of golf at Mendenhall Golf Course. The tournament fee is $20 for adults, $15 for juniors. Friday-Sunday, June 20-22

• Juneau Sports Association - 28th Annual Rainball Invitational softball tournament: The mandatory managers' meeting for this tournament is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, at the TraveLodge. Games start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at both Dimond Park and Savikko Fields, and teams are guaranteed at least four games during the weekend. The tournament opens with round-robin play within the division, then has a double-elimination bracket to decide the winners. Divisions are for men's C, D and E and women's C and D teams. The highest-placing men's and women's C teams receive invitations to the Amateur Softball Association's Northwest sectional tournaments, while the highest-placing men's and women's D teams receive invitations to their sectional tourneys. • Southeast Road Runners Club - Only Fools Run at Midnight: Meet at 11:30 p.m. at Centennial Hall for an 11:59 p.m. race start on the Summer Solstice. This race is a fund-raiser for Southeast Alaska Independent Living. There are two courses, a 5-kilometer run and a 1-mile walk. In past years, this race has drawn several runners in costumes (solo, couples and as running centipedes), and prizes are awarded for best costumes. • Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club - Cowboy Action Shoot: Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range on Montana Creek Road, with shooting at 10 a.m. There will be long-range rifle and Derringer sidematches after the main events. • HoopTime Basketball Pre-Solstice Mexican Dinner Cruise - Meet at the Don Statter Public Boat Harbor in Auke Bay by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, for a 6 p.m. sail aboard one of the Allen Marine catamarans. This is a three-hour wildlife sightseeing cruise with a no-host bar and food catered from El Sombrero, and door prizes given out throughout the evening. The ticket price is $60 for individuals and $100 for couples, with money going toward the HoopTime youth basketball program in Juneau. Tickets can be purchased at Hearthside Books or on the Web at http://www.hooptime-basketball.org/. HoopTime has just made a deal to convert a building in Lemon Creek into a gym, and the club has six months to raise the money to seal the deal. • Capital City Soccer League - Women's Classic Soccer League registration: The CCSL women's classic soccer league begins play on June 30. No experience is necessary; older women and new players are encouraged to participate. Teams play one game per week, on Sundays or Mondays. • Juneau Alpine Club monthly meeting - Meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, at the Mendenhall Library in the Mendenhall Mall. This meeting will include a brief knot-tying workshop in preparation for the Mount Stroller White trek on July 12-13. Info: Dave Duntley, 789-5961.

• Kluane to Chilkat International Bike Relay registration - Registration is open for the 2003 race, which takes place on Saturday, June 21, from Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, to Haines, Alaska. This year team captains need to enter their team in its proper category and pay the fees as soon as possible, with the final team roster being submitted by June 10. The early registration deadline was May 20, and there is a limit of 1,200 riders in the relay race. The categories are for eight, four, two and solo riders, with men's, women's and mixed divisions. All team members had to be registered by June 10. • Yukon River Quest canoe and kayak race registration - Registration for the 460-mile (740 kilometers) paddling marathon was due by May 31. The race starts in downtown Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, on Wednesday, June 25, and teams must reach the finish line in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, within 96 hours. Teams must reach the Carmacks checkpoint (200 miles, 315 kilometers into the course) within 40 hours. The race record is 52 hours, 9 minutes, with most teams finishing between 65 and 80 hours. Last year 36 teams entered, including one from Juneau and one from Skagway. Race categories include voyageur canoe, tandem canoe, tandem kayak and solo kayak. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (June 21) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Friday night youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School have been canceled due to lack of participants. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. • Adult outdoor soccer games - Open soccer scrimmages for adults age 18-older take place from 5-7 p.m. on Sundays (from 7-9 p.m. on June 22) at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park football-soccer field. There are open scrimmages from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays (June 18 and 25) at Adair-Kennedy. There will be open scrimmages for women (age 18-older) from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays (June 22). • 4-H cross-country running program - This year's program will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursdays through the summer at various locations around Juneau. The upcoming schedule has the June 19 meeting at Sandy Beach, the June 26 meeting at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park track and the July 3 meeting at the outdoor covered play area at Riverbend School. There will be two running clubs this year - one for elementary school students led by Jamie and John Bursell, and one for middle school students led by Craig Farrington. The two age groups will have different workouts, but will meet near the same place to make car-pooling easy for parents. The season will culminate with the Douglas Two-Miler run on July 4. • Treadwell Arena summer programs - During June, the arena is available for drop-in basketball from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays and from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays; drop-in in-line skating from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-7 p.m. on Mondays, and from 3-5 p.m. on Fridays; drop-in tennis from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays; and drop-in in-line hockey from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rental times also are available from 7:30-10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In-line skating and basketball fees are $4 for adults, $2 for youth, $1.90 for seniors. Hockey and tennis passes are $5 for adults, $4 for youth and $3 for seniors. Court rentals for tennis and basketball are $20 per hour. Facility rental is $75 per hour or $500 for seven or more hours. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
