Officials euthanize wounded grizzly bear

KENAI - A wounded grizzly bear was euthanized Sunday in Soldotna, state biologists said.

The wounded bear drew a crowd of about 100 with cameras and cell phones at about noon at Mackey Lake Road and the Sterling Highway.

Fish and Game Department officials called police for crowd control.

Biologist Jeff Selinger said the bear had at least three gunshot wounds and all were a few days old.

The bear's paw, rump and gut had been shot.

Selinger said the bear was on its last legs and looking for a place to curl up and die.

He said one person could be fined for throwing rocks at the bear to get a better picture.

No one had reported a bear shot in defense of life or property.
