Educators and other interested people will convene in Juneau this week for the Southeast Alaska Native Education Forum.
The forum is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday morning at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall. It is sponsored by the Alaska Rural Challenge and the Alaska Rural Systemic Initiative.
``We're going to talk about developing recommendations for a regional Native education action plan, a Native teacher training action plan, and an action plan for strengthening the development of a tribal college in the region,'' said Andy Hope, the Southeast regional coordinator for the rural systemic initiative.
Participants also will discuss the Tlingit elders traditional education checklist, compiled by Richard and Nora Dauenhauer. It lays out the traditional knowledge that elders expect children to learn.
The forum is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Thursday with a breakfast, followed by an opening prayer at 9 a.m. The session closes at 5 p.m. A similar schedule will be followed on Friday. Saturday's program ends at noon, and will be followed by a picnic at Twin Lakes.
