On Tuesday, June 5, the Juneau Tobacco Prevention Network held the annual Pink Lung Awards at Di Sopra Restaurant and Lounge at the Fiddlehead. The Pink Lung Awards are dedicated to honor businesses, restaurants and individuals in Juneau who are committed to eliminating the harmful effects of tobacco and second-hand smoke. "It is so important to recognize our community members who are providing and promoting clean, healthy, smoke-free air," said JTPN member Joyanne Bloom. "Many people don't realize that the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke linger in indoor areas such as restaurants for a minimum of two weeks, and even the best ventilation systems out there only filter out the smell of smoke, not the chemicals. The Pink Lung Awards are a way of thanking and recognizing those who are taking bold steps toward ending the deadly effects of tobacco and second-hand smoke."
Colleen Bitter received the award for Di Sopra Restaurant and Lounge at the Fiddlehead for providing one of the only smoke-free restaurant/bar combinations in our community and for protecting their employees from second-hand smoke.
Ken Alper and Jill Ramiel were also recognized for establishing The Backroom at the Silverbow as a smoke-free restaurant/bar. Silverbow Bagels is also smoke-free as well as all of their upstairs guestrooms.
Treasurer Tom Boutin of The Juneau Gun Club was honored for recently making the club a smoke-free facility in Juneau and eliminating the exposure of second-hand smoke for the club's members and guests.
Mike Barton accepted the award for the Juneau International Airport board for making the Juneau Airport 100 percent smoke-free after requests from the community and airport employees.
Judge Peter Froehlich was honored for his work in tobacco prevention and education with young people, and his support of the JTPN and their efforts to promote clean indoor air.
This was the 2nd Annual Pink Lung Award ceremony held by the JTPN, and great support was shown for the group when more than 30 community members dined at Di Sopra restaurant to recognize the award recipients. The JTPN hopes that the public will continue to show support for all tobacco-free facilities.
