Juneau artist Shawn Hatt Cohen thinks the best way to celebrate the summer solstice is to put on an art show with bright, exuberant pieces.
That's the rationale behind "Abundant Light," an eight-artist show open from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 20, and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at The Inner Garden, Cohen's store at 214 North Franklin St. The show runs through July 12.
Cohen also will offer a peyote stitch beading class at 10 a.m. Saturday.
"Hopefully it's an inspiration to more people than just me," Cohen said. "I feel pretty inspired."
Cohen came up with the idea two weeks ago and invited artists she thought might be interested. Artists include: Alan Munro, Dianne Anderson, Mark Vinsel, Nancy Karacand, Ursula Spannage, Nina Massey, Barbara Gruening and Cohen. The media include watercolors, beadwork, oils, acrylics and baskets.
"Some were created especially for the show," Cohen said. "Others fit into the show and were made earlier in the year."
"There are a lot of bright colors and exuberant expressions of color," Cohen said. "It will be light-filled nature, and a lot of nature themes or subjects."
Cohen opened The Inner Garden on March 1 and sells handmade gifts and artwork.
