There's no Lew like an old Lew

There's a cliche that goes, "There's no fool like an old fool."

Sound off on the important issues at

Columnist Lew Williams Jr. seems to be the very person for whom this cliche was meant. No matter what they do or how much chicanery they are guilty of, old Lew just can't find it in himself to let any fault fall on his political friends, no matter how grievous the transgressions. It is always, invariably the other guy's fault.

Old Lew and partisan hacks like him are the unquestioning enablers of the cynically corrupt politicians who are largely to blame for the troubles our country finds itself in today. A prime example is Congressman Don Young, Alaska's ridiculous laughingstock in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Somehow, Young's latest stupidity is dissimulated by old Lew and blamed on (gasp!) environmentalists ("Florida enviros love Young?" Sunday's Empire). Incredible. There is no limit to old Lew's stunningly absurd and imaginative partisanship. He obviously resides in some fantasy world of unreality, peopled by others of his kind - such as our current president and all his cynical, throwback followers.

But the plain truth of Young's latest outrage is that he sold his position for money and voted for an earmark of no other conceivable interest to Young or the Alaskans he supposedly represents.

Recently, several local folks arrogantly calling themselves "Corrupt Bastards" were federally indicted for that very reason. One can hope this follows Young home, too.
