ANCHORAGE - The state is closing the Deshka River to king salmon fishing.
The emergency order takes effect at 11 p.m. Friday.
The escapement goal for the river is 13,000 to 28,000 fish and about half of that should be beyond a weir seven miles upriver by Friday.
However, just 2,009 fish had passed as of Thursday morning, and escapement is projected to be about 4,112 fish.
Biologists are also closing the final scheduled commercial fishing period set for Monday.
They said the emergency closure on the Deshka could be lifted if escapement meets goals before the regular July 13 season closure.
The popular destination for anglers is a tributary of the Susitna River in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
